American singer Bobby Caldwell, famous for hits like “What You Won’t Do For Love” and “Open Your Eyes,” has passed away at the age of 71. His representative shared that Caldwell had been battling an illness for many years before passing away in his sleep on March 14th at his residence in New Jersey.
Caldwell’s wife since 2004, Mary Caldwell, confirmed the news on Twitter and expressed her heartbreak over his loss.
Caldwell had a successful career spanning several decades, with a repertoire that included R&B, soul, jazz, and adult contemporary. He was known for his soulful and versatile vocals, which shone through in his hit songs.
“What You Won’t Do For Love,” released on his debut album of the same name in 1978, became a multi-generational hit and was sampled and covered by numerous artists like Tupac Shakur, Boyz II Men, and Michael Bolton. His song “Open Your Eyes,” off his 1980 album “Cat in the Hat,” was also sampled by Common and covered by John Legend.
In addition to his music career, Caldwell also starred as Frank Sinatra in the David Cassidy/Don Reo theatrical production The Rat Pack Is Back in Las Vegas, receiving rave reviews for his performance. He made numerous national and local network appearances, including on The CBS Second Cup Café, The Tonight Show starring Jay Leno and BET Jazz Central.
