The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported a significant week of operations across Northern Nigeria, destroying a massive cannabis plantation and arresting multiple suspects involved in drug trafficking.
In a major operation in Taraba State, a joint team comprising the NDLEA, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Forest Security Service, and local vigilantes uncovered an extensive 71.5-hectare cannabis farm in the Mayodoga forest.
The operatives destroyed 178,750 kilograms of cultivated skunk and arrested the alleged owner, 30-year-old Alfa Andrew, who was found in possession of a dane gun at the scene.
In a separate interception in Kaduna, NDLEA officers working at the Abuja/Kaduna tollgate uncovered a significant consignment of pharmaceuticals.
They arrested one Hassan Buba after discovering 104,900 capsules of tramadol concealed within the driver’s compartment of a fuel tanker. The agency suspects the drugs were destined for insurgent groups in Borno State.
Further successes were recorded in Borno State itself, where a major opioid supplier, 33-year-old Uchenna Umeh, was arrested in Maiduguri.
A search of his residence yielded a substantial cache, including over 30,000 tramadol pills, nearly 8,000 rophyenol tablets, and almost eight million naira in cash. Also, the arrests targeting the trafficking of tramadol, diazepam, codeine syrup, and skunk were made in Nasarawa, Adamawa, and Kano states, leading to the seizure of hundreds of thousands of pills and bottles of illicit substances.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd.), commended the officers involved for their successful operations, which have significantly disrupted several drug distribution networks in the region.
