This stops melatonin production and leads to sleep issues, hormone problems, and long-term damage to skin health.

  2. Poor Skin Repair: Melatonin doesn’t just help us sleep; it also fixes skin damage. When melatonin levels drop at night, the skin’s ability to heal slows down, leaving it weaker against stress.
  3. Higher Risk of Skin Problems: Being around artificial light for long periods can worsen skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. This may happen due to the body’s reaction to constant light exposure.
  4. Cancer Risk: Some studies hint that light pollution might raise the chance of skin cancer by interfering with the body’s ability to repair damaged DNA at night.

Ways to Reduce Light Pollution

Fixing light pollution’s effects needs personal and public efforts:

  1. Better Lighting Habits:
    • Spend less time on screens before bed and use blue light filters on devices.
    • Use blackout curtains to block light from outside. Additionally, choose dim, warm-colored lights at night to mimic sunset colors.
  2. Support Policies: Governments can:
    • Install shielded outdoor lights that point down.
    • Use motion-sensor lights that turn on only when needed.
    • Promote lights that limit blue light emissions.
  3. Spread Awareness: Teach people about how light pollution harms health and how they can protect themselves. For instance, simple changes at home can make a big difference.
  4. Promote Research and New Ideas: We need more research on how light pollution affects health. In addition, creating lighting that works well but doesn’t harm people is important.
