President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic accident involving members of the Kano State sports contingent returning from the recently concluded National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
In a condolence message released on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Tinubu described the incident as a devastating blow to the nation, highlighting its impact on Nigeria’s sporting community.
The accident happened while the contingent was on its way back to Kano, resulting in the loss of 22 lives.
The victims included athletes, journalists, medical personnel, and administrators who had participated in the festival.
The Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the fatalities and reported that several others were injured and received medical attention.
President Tinubu conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who died.
He said the tragedy casts a shadow over the National Sports Festival, which is meant to be a celebration of unity, talent, and excellence.
He noted that the dedication and aspirations of the victims reflected the resilient spirit of Nigerians.
In his message, Tinubu pledged that the best way to honour the victims would be to take meaningful steps to prevent similar tragedies in the future by improving safety standards in the country’s transportation system.
He prayed for the peaceful rest of the departed souls and asked God to grant strength and comfort to the grieving families.
The president also assured the people of Kano State that the federal government stands with them during this difficult time.
