President Bola Tinubu has sent a high-level federal delegation to Niger State to express condolences and coordinate relief efforts after catastrophic floods ravaged Mokwa and surrounding areas.

The disaster, which struck on May 28, 2025, has resulted in at least 151 confirmed deaths, with over 100 individuals still missing and thousands displaced.

The delegation, led by Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, visited Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba in Minna. Minister Idris conveyed President Tinubu’s deep sorrow over the tragedy and affirmed the federal government’s commitment to supporting the affected communities.

Idris stated that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has conducted a comprehensive assessment and is actively delivering emergency relief, including food, medical supplies, and shelter. He emphasised that the President has directed all available federal resources to be mobilised to assist the victims and ensure their immediate needs are met.

In addition to immediate relief, the President has instructed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to collaborate with state governments to intensify public awareness campaigns, particularly in flood-prone areas, to encourage residents to heed early warning signs and take preventive measures.

Minister Yilwatda announced that the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons will take over from NEMA to provide continued care and support to those displaced by the disaster. He also mentioned that the government is exploring additional support measures for the affected individuals.

Deputy Governor Garba expressed profound gratitude for the federal government’s swift response, describing it as a clear demonstration of the administration’s commitment to the welfare of citizens in times of crisis. He reported that, so far, 151 bodies have been recovered and laid to rest, and a total of 503 houses have been destroyed by the floods.
