Residents of Yola and Jalingo are currently experiencing a complete power outage as the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has commenced emergency repairs on critical transmission infrastructure.
The electricity disruption, which began in the early hours, has affected homes, businesses, and government facilities across both state capitals, leaving many dependent on alternative power sources.
TCN officials explained that the temporary blackout became necessary to allow engineers to safely conduct vital maintenance work on ageing transmission lines and substations serving the region.
The repairs are part of ongoing efforts to improve power supply reliability and prevent future system failures in the Northeast zone. While no specific timeline was given for restoration, authorities assured the public that work was progressing urgently to minimise the duration of the outage.
The sudden power cut has disrupted commercial activities, with banks, hospitals, and small businesses forced to rely on generators. Residents expressed frustration over the lack of prior notice, with many reporting significant inconveniences, including perishable goods spoiling in homes and businesses. Some critical healthcare facilities have activated emergency power protocols to maintain essential services.
State government officials have appealed for patience, acknowledging the hardship caused by the outage but emphasising that the repairs will ultimately lead to a more stable electricity supply.
TCN has promised to provide regular updates on the repair progress and has mobilised additional technical teams to expedite the restoration process. The company advised residents to switch off electrical appliances to prevent damage from potential power surges when supply resumes.
