The Nigerian Army in the North-East has announced the release of Lydia Simon, a Chibok girl who had been held hostage by Boko Haram militants for ten years.
The Department of Army Public Relations issued a statement on Thursday confirming this.
Lydia and her three children were rescued by forces executing Operation Desert Sanity III near Ngoshe in Borno State’s Gwoza Local Government Area, according to military authorities.
Lydia was one of the abducted Chibok Secondary School girls with serial number 68, according to the statement.
She was five months pregnant when she was rescued, and she claimed to be from Chibok’s Pemi Town.
The statement said that on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, Nigerian Army personnel assigned for counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations in the North Central successfully ambushed and neutralised three terrorists on a mission to cause havoc.
According to statistics published by the parents of the abducted schoolgirls, 271 pupils were kidnapped, but 57 fled quickly in 2014, and 103 were released thanks to the Federal Government’s assistance.
Similarly, 20 others were liberated thanks to the efforts of the state administration.
However, 92 students remain in captivity.
