President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met privately at the Vatican during Pope Francis’s funeral, engaging in a significant discussion regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and potential avenues for peace.
In the meeting, Zelensky emphasised Ukraine’s need for additional military support, a request he has consistently made over the past three years.
Trump acknowledged Zelensky’s dedication to his country, stating, “He wants to do something good for his country and is working hard.”
However, Trump expressed disappointment over recent Russian missile attacks on Ukraine, especially following discussions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump’s peace envoy, Steve Witkoff.
He remarked, “I was very disappointed that missiles were flying by Russia.”
When questioned about his trust in Putin, Trump responded cautiously, indicating he would assess the situation in the coming weeks.
He also highlighted the human cost of the conflict, noting that thousands are dying weekly.
Trump reiterated his desire for a ceasefire, urging Putin to “stop shooting” and finalise a peace agreement.
He believes that the framework for a deal exists and is hopeful for its realisation.
Reflecting on his relationship with Zelensky, Trump mentioned past disagreements but emphasised a mutual understanding of the challenges.
Trump observed that Zelensky appeared more composed and eager to reach a resolution.
This meeting marks a pivotal moment in the U.S.’s efforts to mediate peace between Ukraine and Russia, with both leaders showing a willingness to engage in constructive dialogue.
