Tragedy struck in Kazaure town, Jigawa State, on Saturday afternoon when two young men lost their lives after drowning in a dam while attempting to escape a raid by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 p.m. when anti-narcotics officers stormed a suspected drug joint located in the Ganguli area of the town.
The deceased have been identified as 22-year-old Garzali Garba from Tsohon Kafib Quarters and 21-year-old Usama Ahmed from Kanti Quarters, both residents of Kazaure.
According to eyewitness accounts, the two men, in a bid to evade arrest by the NDLEA operatives, attempted to flee by diving into a nearby dam. Sadly, they both drowned during the escape attempt.
In the wake of the tragic event, a combined team of security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, was swiftly deployed to the area.
Their presence was aimed at preventing any potential breakdown of law and order and maintaining calm within the community. As a precautionary measure, the local NDLEA office in Kazaure was also reinforced with additional personnel.
Community leaders and stakeholders were actively engaged to appeal for calm and work alongside security forces to ensure peace was maintained in the town.
The incident has cast a sombre mood over Kazaure in Jigawa State, highlighting the dangers associated with both drug-related activities and the extreme measures taken to avoid arrest.
