Uju Anya has criticized Nigerian men who have been shaming her for being a lesbian. According to Anya, many married women send her direct messages admitting they are closeted lesbians. Anya believes that these women remain in their marriages because of societal pressures that offer them no choice.
Uju Anya is a Nigerian professor based in the US and an LGBTQ activist. She has pointed out that the men who criticize homosexuality end up unknowingly married to closeted lesbians. Also, she said that those who claim it is “not African” create a society where people end up in unhappy marriages. She advised men to be more open-minded and accepting of people’s sexual orientations. This -she says- will create a society where everyone can live their lives without fear of shame or discrimination.
Anya’s message highlights the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community in Nigeria, where same-sex relationships are illegal and carry a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
