The authorities of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) in Awka have implemented an immediate and indefinite ban on all final-year student examination “signing off” celebrations.
The directive, announced by Registrar Dr. Chinenye Okeke in a press release dated Tuesday, August 20, 2025, prohibits these traditional orchestration events on university premises.
The university management cited recurring incidents of chaos, violence, and a significant disruption to normal academic activities as the primary reasons for this decisive action.
The statement further emphasised that these celebrations often attract unauthorised individuals to the campus, which poses a substantial threat to the safety and security of students, staff, and the entire university community.
The ban is enforced with severe consequences for any violations. Students found participating in or organising any form of “signing off” orchestration now face strict disciplinary measures, including the possibility of rustication.
Furthermore, the university has warned that any outsiders who enter the campus to support such activities may be subject to arrest and prosecution by law enforcement for disorderly conduct and breach of peace.
Dr. Okeke reiterated the institution’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment conducive to academic pursuits.
The management urged all students to concentrate on their academic responsibilities and to promptly report any instances of misconduct or safety threats to the appropriate university authorities. This move aligns with the university’s broader efforts to uphold order and discipline, which have recently included disciplinary actions against staff for misconduct and investigations into other student-lecturer incidents.
