A student of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has tragically died after jumping from a three-storey building in Awka, Anambra State.
The incident occurred around 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at a lodge near Royal Kitchen junction, close to the university gate.
According to residents, the student had consumed a hard drug known locally as “Mkpuru Mmiri” before the incident. Neighbours reported hearing a loud noise and later found the victim’s body lying in a pool of blood. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Further investigation revealed that the student’s roommate was also under the influence of the same substance and was found in an incoherent state in their room. The roommate is currently in police custody and will be questioned once he stabilises.
The identity of the deceased has not been disclosed, pending notification of his family. Authorities of UNIZIK are working to reach the family while investigations into the incident continue.
As of the time of reporting, police or UNIZIK authorities have yet to confirm the incident. The tragic event has raised concerns about the prevalence of drug abuse among students and the need for increased awareness and intervention programs.
