A United States federal judge, James Boasberg, has threatened to hold the administration of former President Donald Trump in contempt of court for defying a court order to suspend deportation flights.
According to a report by the BBC, Judge Boasberg accused the Trump administration of showing “willful disregard” for an earlier directive halting the deportation of over 200 individuals to El Salvador last month.
The administration had invoked a 227-year-old law, originally intended to protect national security during wartime, to justify carrying out the mass deportation despite the court’s ruling.
In his statement, Boasberg said, “The Court does not reach such conclusion lightly or hastily; indeed, it has given Defendants ample opportunity to rectify or explain their actions. None of their responses has been satisfactory.”
The judge’s decision to move toward contempt proceedings signals an escalation in the ongoing conflict between the judiciary and the executive branch over the limits of presidential authority.
The deportation clash highlights broader tensions over Trump administration’s immigration policy and the scope of emergency powers available to the White House.
