We live in a multilingual world. There are so many languages worldwide. More than seven thousand languages are spoken in the world today. Each and every one of them makes the world a diverse and beautiful place. As the world is becoming increasingly globalised, speaking a second language can always give you a fair advantage.  Let us see some of the benefits of learning a second language:

It can help you in your career.

A second language can drastically change your career. Living in an interconnected world means that more and more jobs are advertising positions where knowing more than one language is essential.  As more companies trade internationally and create relationships with other countries, employees are often asked to travel for work, enhance these relationships, or be relocated abroad.

Cultural Integration.

Learning a second language can give you insight into other cultures. Without understanding a foreign language, you will not fully be able to grasp the culture of the land you live. For example, if you stay in western Nigeria, and you don’t learn to speak Yoruba, you might not fully learn the culture of the land in which you live. This applies to multicultural countries across the world. Learning a second language opens up the opportunity for being part of a community with a different culture, and learn more about the world around us.

It improves your memory.

As you push your brain to learn new languages, it helps to train your brain.  The more you train your brain, the better your brain’s functions work. Learning a new language pushes your brain to get familiar with new grammar and vocabulary rules. It allows you to train your memory to remember new words, make connections between them, and use them in contextual situations.

Enhances your ability to multitask.

The skill required to switch between languages is a special one. Multilingual people have the ability to switch between languages. The ability to think in different languages and communicate in them helps with multitasking.

Thus, if you have wanted to learn a second language, whether a foreign one or a local one, do not hesitate, and do not see it as a waste of time. You will definitely benefit one way or the other.
