Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stressed the need for joint efforts in addressing the security challenges affecting Abuja.

Speaking in the capital, Wike said that ensuring the security of the FCT is beyond what the FCT Administration alone can handle, given the city’s significance as the seat of Nigeria’s government and home to key institutions.

He explained that Abuja hosts vital national figures and offices, including the President, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and corporate headquarters, making it a critical area that requires robust and coordinated security strategies.

Wike stated that the burden of safeguarding the FCT should not rest solely on his shoulders, emphasising that “this city requires total security architecture because of its national importance.”

According to Wike, the security concerns in Abuja are complex and cannot be solved by one sector alone. He advocated for a stakeholders’ summit that brings together experts from the security, health, and other relevant sectors to create comprehensive solutions.

He remarked that the challenges in the FCT need a well-rounded and inclusive approach to achieve meaningful results.

The minister also identified political bottlenecks as a major hindrance to his administration’s efforts to improve security.

He claimed that certain individuals have deliberately obstructed the implementation of surveillance infrastructure, including the installation of security cameras across the city, thereby limiting progress on vital safety measures.

Wike reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with all relevant security agencies. He concluded by insisting that failure is not an option when it comes to securing the nation’s capital, calling for shared responsibility and unity of purpose among all stakeholders to ensure the safety and stability of the FCT.
