Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Yelewata, Benue State, have firmly rejected plans to return to their ancestral homes, citing persistent insecurity in the region.
The displaced communities, who have been living in camps due to recurring attacks, insist they will not go back unless the government provides adequate security measures to protect them.
According to reports, the IDPs expressed their concerns during a meeting with government officials and humanitarian agencies.
Many recounted their traumatic experiences, including violent attacks by armed groups that forced them to flee their homes in the first place. They argued that without concrete security arrangements, returning would put their lives at risk once again.
A spokesperson for the displaced persons stated, “No security, no return. We cannot go back to our villages only to face the same dangers that drove us away. The government must ensure our safety before we even consider returning.”
The IDPs also highlighted the lack of basic amenities, such as healthcare and schools, in their home communities, further complicating their willingness to relocate.
Local authorities acknowledged the concerns but emphasised efforts to restore peace in the affected areas. Security operatives have reportedly increased patrols, and discussions are ongoing with community leaders to address the crisis.
However, the IDPs remain sceptical, demanding visible and sustainable security improvements before any resettlement plans proceed.
The situation reflects a broader challenge in Nigeria’s conflict-affected regions, where displaced populations often hesitate to return despite government assurances.
Without tangible security guarantees, the Yelewata IDPs say they have no choice but to remain in the camps, where they at least feel somewhat protected. The standoff underscores the urgent need for effective security strategies to facilitate the safe return of displaced communities.
