A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s Sulawesi region on Saturday, sending tremors through nearby areas.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the 6.0 magnitude earthquake occurred around 12:51 GMT, with its epicentre located about 165 kilometres west of Gorontalo and at a depth of 108.4 kilometres.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency confirmed the seismic event but stated there was no risk of a tsunami.

Although the tremor was felt in surrounding communities, there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.

Indonesia, positioned on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is highly prone to seismic activity due to the constant shifting of tectonic plates. Magnitude earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common in the region.

Authorities have urged residents to stay alert and follow safety guidelines, especially in case of possible aftershocks from the magnitude earthquake. Monitoring continues as emergency services remain on standby.
