Do we know someone who usually texts around weird hours, like 2 am? I do. I’d wake up around 5 am and ask “why in the lord’s name would you text me around this time? Don’t you sleep?”. And they’d go on to explain that sleeping isn’t very easy. It’s basic knowledge to ask “isn’t that like insomnia?”. Of course, I’d receive a reply like “God forbid, I reject it” 🙄.
A person with insomnia has trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep. Short-term insomnia can cause daytime fatigue or tiredness, attention problems, and other issues.
Acute insomnia also referred to as short-term insomnia is an issue that can easily be gotten rid of. Chronic insomnia on the other hand can last longer than a few months. That’s when it’s an issue.
An insomniac has trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep. They might often get up too early. This may result in problems like Lethargy and tiredness during the day, mood swings, irritation, and anxiety are signs of insomnia.
Other symptoms of insomnia include:
- Difficulty falling asleep or not falling asleep at all (at night)
- And if you manage to fall asleep, you wake up during the night unable to fall back asleep.
- The constant feeling of fatigue because you’re not well rested.
- Difficulty focusing on tasks or paying attention
- Daytime sleepiness or tiredness
- Decreased motivation
Although there exist numerous reasons why people get acute insomnia other than it being a medical condition for them, here are a few reasons why it occurs:
- Stress
- A traumatic event
- A change in your sleeping schedule
For chronic insomnia:
- Depression
- Substance abuse
- Anxiety isn’t excluded
- Serious medical illnesses like cancer
This ailment has no respect for gender or age as it can occur in a child, teenager, an adult and older people. Unless it is caused by these listed above, it could be acute. And even when it’s serious, isn’t it better to know and get it treated than deceive ourselves?
