The Ebonyi State government announced that it has granted N13 billion for the urgent restoration of the Chuba Okadigbo International Airport runway in Onueke, Ezza South Local Government Area.

The Chuba Okadigbo airport runway is being renovated only three months after the previous governor David Umahi built and commissioned it.

Mrs Ngozi Obichukwu, the commissioner of Aviation and Transport Technology, stated this to reporters at the airport immediately after the ceremonial delivery of the runway site to the contractor.

According to Obichukwu, the runway rehabilitation project, which was granted to Infrastructure Development Company, IDC, will take a maximum of eight months to complete.

“The contractor has fulfilled the procurement requirements that we gave them, at the biding opening, assessment and evaluation.

“The IDC construction company has today meet up with our requirements on the runway design. They will start work next week and the job is expected to be completed in the six to eight months, so that the full flight operations will start,”She explained.

She continued by saying that the contractor has been mobilised by 50% by the state government, which is led by Governor Francis Nwifuru, allowing him to start working at the runway site right away.

The IDC construction company’s Area Manager, Engineer Youssef Zghib, said that the concrete used for the airport runway will be scraped halfway to allow the asphalting to merge together.

He said:

“The only reason why the flight could not land here is because of the rigidity of the concrete and once the 150mm of combined asphalt is layed, there will be no other excuse for an airline not to land here.”
