The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and the country’s airlines have banned the usage of matted woven bags, colloquially known as Ghana-Must-Go, by airport passengers.

This was stated in a circular signed by the Airport Services manager and captioned “Re: Prohibition of Ghanaian Usage Must End.”

Ghana Must-Go bags are quite popular among Nigerians and other African countries, particularly Ghana.

According to the circular, FAAN noted that the nation’s airlines were consistently incurring enormous expenditures as a result of the damages caused by the usage of the iconic Ghana-Must-Go bags, which were mostly utilised for the simple packaging of things.

According to FAAN, the bags have a habit of triggering significant problems in airport conveyor belt systems.

This alert was given to all Nigerian airlines, and they were told to relay it to their passengers and travel partners.

Passengers were urged to forego the Ghana-Must-Go bags and instead pack their belongings for travel in boxes or something similar. Additionally, baggage carried in banned bags must be carefully wrapped before airports would accept it.

The prohibition went into force in several airports on November 25, 2023.

Wondwossen Beyene, General Manager of Ethiopian Airlines Nigeria, also warned passengers in a statement that,

“We would like to inform you of a restriction regarding the usage of irregularly shaped packages on Ethiopian Airlines flights. It is strictly prohibited to bring woven sack unless they are adequately packed in a carton or hardcover rectangular containers. “This restriction has been implemented due to the frequent occurrence of damages to conveyor belts at various airports, resulting in significant costs incurred by the airlines involved. We kindly request your cooperation in complying with this rule to ensure the smooth operations of our flights and to minimize any potential disruptions caused by damaged conveyor belts.”
