On Thursday, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission conducted an enforcement operation at two supermarkets in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, to check compliance with pricing display and quantity requirements.

Dr Adamu Abdullahi, Executive Secretary of the Commission, stated that the exercise, which aims to reduce the high cost of food items throughout the country, will be expanded to Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, and other towns in the coming weeks.

Abdullahi said unannounced inspections will be conducted at stores and open marketplaces in several states as part of steps to limit the unexpected price spikes that had failed to respond to the naira’s recent strengthening.

The FCCPC head also revealed intentions to raid certain open large marketplaces in the FCT on Friday (today) to combat merchants’ unjustified increases in consumable costs.

During the several-hour-long exercise, the FCCPC locked 4U Supermarket and removed 33 bags of suspected fake stallion and caprice rice contaminated with weevils from one of the supermarket’s branches at 58 Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, Wuse II.
