The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) said that 220 alleged drug traffickers were detained in the state between February and June 2024.
Mr Callys Alumona, the agency’s state commander, announced at a ceremony in Benin City commemorating the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Trafficking.
He stated that the agency obtained 18 convictions while the trial of 115 accused is still underway at the Federal High Court in Benin City.
He also reported that two of the four drug lords on the agency’s blacklist have been caught and convicted, while the other two are being monitored.
According to him, 1,676,994 kilogrammes of hard narcotics were seized.
Alumona further stated that 14 cannabis plantations totalling 18.5 hectares and about 46,251.433kg of the material were destroyed throughout the time.
He said that as part of the agency’s rehabilitation and counselling programme, 154 suspected drug users were counselled, with eight of them being indoor customers.
He said:
“It is interesting to note that our efforts in eradicating substance use in Edo state, especially Ihama road, Boundary road, TV Road, Sapele road axis of Benin, Ekpoma, Uromi, Auchi, Igarra, Abudu and others are yielding positive results.”
He did, however, mention limited functioning operating vehicles and the public’s hesitancy to contribute trustworthy information as problems for the organisation.
