Nollywood actor and pastor Yul Edochie has stirred controversy by claiming credit for the popular name ‘Nwunye Odogwu’.
On Instagram, Yul asserted that he coined the term in 2022 to praise his second wife, Judy Austin, and that it has since become widely adopted. He urged Nigerians to acknowledge his contribution.
Yul Edochie lays claim to ‘Nwunye Odogwu’
In 2022, I launched the name NWUNYE ODOGWU on social media, which is what I call Ijelem, Judy Austin. The name immediately went viral. It went global. Today, everybody is answering Nwunye Odogwu, even those still looking for husbands. Don’t worry; God will answer your prayers. As una dey use the name, just remember where it came from and give me my credit. Make God no judge una,” Yul wrote.
Social media users did not take kindly to his statement, criticizing him for boasting about such an achievement:
– Nene George: “Imagine the accomplishment he’s bragging about? Nna m Yul, who do you this? Your mates are counting money, and you’re here bragging because of a name. Very soon, you’ll claim you also created Odogwu Silencer.”
– MayNationn_: “Oh Lord, when others are busy making work for themselves and kids, this one who went and kidnapped a married woman and her kids is here fighting on a name he can’t even relate to. Imagine calling Jude a Nwunye Odogwu.”
– Teeh Lyfstyle: “Lmao between Judy and Yul, I no come sabi who tie each other for bottle.”
– Emeka_: “Delulu is always the solution for isimmili di egwu.”
– Marvy Mahy: “Queen May did an extraordinary job hiding this man’s cho cho character from us all this while.”

Earlier this year, Yul had insisted he originated the slang “No gree for anybody,” demanding credit for its popularity.
Actor Uche Maduagwu also criticized Yul for his claims, contrasting his actions with those of colleagues who celebrate wedding anniversaries. Uche advised Yul to seek prayers in church instead of creating names.

Previously, Uche lambasted Yul for his Father’s Day message to men, advising them against infidelity while pointing out Yul’s past involvement with Judy Austin before she became his second wife. Uche praised Yul’s estranged wife, May, for enduring the situation.
