Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas has established a seven-member local government autonomy advisory committee.

The committee, which was officially established on Monday in Jalingo, the state capital, was tasked with advising the government on the implementation of local government autonomy.

The move was prompted by a recent Supreme Court decision that granted complete power to the 774 local government councils dispersed across the country.

Governor Kefas characterised the committee’s establishment as an important step forward in the state’s transition to a more democratic, responsible, and efficient governing structure.

The governor stated that the decision was consistent with his administration’s commitment to centralization and local empowerment and that it also paved the way for full autonomy of local government councils.

Emphasising that the judgement reaffirmed his earlier decision to hold local government elections on November 18th, 2023 and swear in the chairmen on November 23rd, 2023, he stated that the steps were taken to ensure that local government councils have the mandate and legitimacy to effectively serve their communities.
