Samuel Ogazi of Nigeria made history yesterday, becoming the first Nigerian athlete in 36 years to qualify for the men’s 400m final at the Olympic Games, following in the footsteps of the great Innocent Egbunike.
Ogazi put up an excellent effort, posting a new personal best of 44.41 seconds to finish third in heat 3 of the 400m semifinals, booking his place in the final.
This incredible performance is a watershed moment for Nigerian athletics, as Ogazi’s qualifying for the final inspires pride and optimism throughout the country. His perseverance and hard work have been obvious throughout the tournament, and he is now preparing to contend for Olympic gold in the final.
Ayomide Bello and Beauty Otuedo of Nigeria will compete in Final B of the women’s Canoe Doubles 500m event at the Olympics. The pair performed admirably in their quarterfinal heat, coming sixth in 2:07.86.
Their presence in the final reflects their passion and expertise in the sport of canoeing.
Senator John Owan Enoh, the Minister of Sports Development, expressed his delight and encouragement for the athletes, saying:
