The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has responded to allegations of poor feeding conditions in the country’s correctional facilities, stating that the claims are exaggerated and misleading.
Reacting to recent reports and social media commentary suggesting that inmates are being served substandard or insufficient meals, the NCoS maintained that feeding arrangements within correctional centres are handled according to approved standards.
NCoS emphasised that despite economic challenges and inflation affecting food prices, it has continued to prioritize the welfare of inmates, including providing them with adequate meals.
A spokesperson for the NCoS, Abubakar Umar, stated that the federal government allocates funds for the feeding of inmates and that these funds are disbursed in line with due process.
He noted that any contractor found guilty of breaching the contract terms or delivering substandard services would be sanctioned accordingly.
NCoS spokesperson also pointed out that regular inspections are carried out to ensure compliance with feeding standards and that complaints from inmates are taken seriously.
Umar further explained that misinformation about the conditions in correctional centres often stems from individuals seeking to tarnish the image of the service or push specific agendas.
He urged the public to rely on verified information and avoid spreading false narratives that may incite public distrust.
The NCoS reiterated its commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of inmates, adding that correctional centres across Nigeria are being gradually improved under ongoing reforms.
It also called on stakeholders, including civil society groups, to work collaboratively in addressing challenges within the prison system while supporting rehabilitation efforts.
