Senator Umar Abubakar Tafida, the Deputy Governor of Kebbi State, visited Rafin Atiku Ward in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday to evaluate the destruction caused by recent flooding in the area.
The disaster, triggered by heavy rainfall and blocked drainage systems, resulted in significant damage to residential properties and personal belongings.
During his inspection tour, Senator Tafida witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of the floods, which destroyed buildings and swept away food supplies, clothing, and other household items.
Residents expressed their distress over the incident, explaining that the primary drainage channel in the area had become clogged with waste, leading to severe overflow during the downpour.
The deputy governor was accompanied by key government officials, including Bello Yakubu Rilisco, Chairman of the Kebbi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA); Alhaji Musa Mohammad Tungulawa, Commissioner for Environment; and Comrade Nura Bala Fingilla, Commissioner for Youth and Sports. Together, they assessed the situation and discussed immediate relief measures for affected families.
The deputy governor assured residents that the state government would take swift action to address both the immediate and long-term effects of the flooding. He emphasised the need for proper waste management and regular drainage maintenance to prevent future occurrences.
Additionally, Senator Tafida directed relevant agencies to provide emergency assistance, including food, shelter, and medical supplies, to those displaced by the disaster.
The Kebbi State government has pledged to work with community leaders to implement sustainable solutions, including improved urban planning and flood prevention strategies.
