Dele Momodu declares Atiku Abubakar as Nigeria’s most feared opposition figure

Media entrepreneur and political analyst Dele Momodu has revealed his reasons for leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while declaring his support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The publisher of Ovation International made these revelations during a recent appearance on Channels Television, where he provided insight into Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.

Momodu, who previously ran for president in 2011 and participated in the PDP’s 2022 presidential primaries, described his political realignment as a strategic decision.

“Everybody is afraid of Atiku, and that is exactly why I, Dele Momodu, support him,” he stated emphatically during the interview. According to Momodu, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) views Atiku as their most significant threat, which explains why various political actors have attempted to undermine his credibility.

“The fear the ruling party has for him shows he remains the most formidable opposition figure today,” Momodu explained.

“When everyone is trying to discredit or silence a man, it means he’s the one they truly fear.” The veteran journalist suggested that this widespread apprehension among political elites strengthens Atiku’s position as the opposition’s standard bearer.

Dele Momodu’s decision to switch parties comes after what he described as a careful analysis of Nigeria’s political dynamics. The ADC, which has recently gained prominence as an alternative platform for opposition figures, appears poised to become a significant force in the next election cycle. His endorsement of Atiku adds to growing speculation about potential opposition alliances ahead of 2027.

The media mogul’s political journey includes his 2011 presidential bid under the National Conscience Party and his participation in the PDP’s 2022 primaries.

His latest move underscores the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition circles as various stakeholders position themselves for the next general elections. Momodu’s statements highlight Atiku’s enduring influence in Nigerian politics, despite the former vice president’s previous electoral setbacks.

As the 2027 elections approach, political observers will be watching closely to see if Dele Momodu’s prediction about Atiku’s political strength holds, and whether the ADC can indeed emerge as a viable platform for opposition unity against the ruling APC. The coming months are likely to see more political manoeuvres as Nigeria’s opposition seeks to present a united front against the governing party.
