Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has disclosed that more than 15,000 applicants have applied for the 3,000 available positions in the state civil service.
The vacancies were created after a verification exercise uncovered 3,000 ghost workers across three sectors: teaching (1,000 positions), healthcare (1,000), and general civil service (1,000).
Speaking during a monthly prayer service in Uyo, Governor Eno assured residents of a transparent recruitment process, emphasising that selection would be strictly merit-based.
“The screening will involve computer-based testing with instant results. There are no slots or favouritism in this exercise,” he stated.
The announcement comes as a relief to job seekers, as past recruitment exercises in the state had been criticised for opacity and preferential treatment.
Eno also shared updates on ongoing projects, noting his recent inspection of 23 initiatives across Akwa Ibom. He expressed satisfaction at seeing young professionals, including engineers, artisans, and female project leaders, actively contributing to development efforts. “This is the spirit we must encourage—hard work and dedication,” the governor added.
The high number of applications reflects the pressing demand for employment opportunities in the state. Authorities have pledged to ensure fairness in filling the vacancies, with successful candidates expected to be announced following the computerised assessment process.
