ADC criticises Tinubu government over delay in ambassador appointments

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its failure to appoint ambassadors to key diplomatic posts, particularly in Washington D.C., the United States capital.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party described the situation as a “national embarrassment,” especially following a recent U.S. travel advisory warning citizens against visiting Nigeria due to insecurity and poor healthcare infrastructure.

The ADC expressed alarm over the latest U.S. government advisory, which classified Nigeria as a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” destination. The party argued that this reflects poorly on the Tinubu administration’s ability to address critical national issues.

“For a country with over 200 million people, this is another clear sign that the government is not doing its job well,” the statement read. It further highlighted the irony that Nigeria currently lacks an ambassador in Washington D.C., the same city where the travel warning was issued.

The opposition party recalled raising concerns about the diplomatic gap days earlier and accused the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of offering excuses rather than resolving the matter.

According to the ADC, Nigeria’s absence from key global discussions has left the country “voiceless” at a time when international confidence in its systems is declining.

The statement noted that since Nigeria recalled its ambassadors in October 2023, five G7 nations have undergone leadership changes, yet Nigeria has not deployed top diplomats to engage with these new governments.

The ADC dismissed the administration’s claim of prioritising merit-based appointments, calling the delay a major foreign policy failure. “Not even during the civil war did Nigeria go this long without ambassadors,” the party added, urging immediate action to restore the country’s diplomatic presence.
