Aston Villa legend Gabby Agbonlahor has dismissed concerns over Liverpool’s interest in star striker Ollie Watkins, stating that even a £100 million bid would not be sufficient to lure him away from Villa Park.
Watkins’ Stellar Season
Watkins played a pivotal role in securing Aston Villa’s spot in next season’s Champions League, scoring 19 goals in the Premier League. His impressive performance has also earned him a place in the preliminary England squad for Euro 2024.
Liverpool’s Interest
Reports suggest that new Liverpool manager Arne Slot is keen on bringing Watkins to Anfield to replace Darwin Nunez, who has struggled to find form. However, Agbonlahor is confident that Villa will not part ways with their key player.
Agbonlahor’s Take
“Not worried one bit,” Agbonlahor said when asked about the rumors. “You’re going to hear these rumors because of how well he’s done. He’s ‘Mr. Reliable’ and his injury record is outstanding. He doesn’t get injured. He gets out there, no matter what. Nineteen Premier League goals last season… outstanding. No penalties. His finishing has got so clinical.”
Long-Term Commitment
Watkins signed a five-year contract extension in October, committing to Villa until 2028. Agbonlahor emphasized that Watkins is crucial to Villa’s plans under manager Unai Emery, who also recently signed a five-year deal.
Agbonlahor’s Record and Hopes for Watkins
Agbonlahor, Villa’s all-time leading Premier League scorer with 73 goals, is supportive of Watkins potentially breaking his record. Watkins has already scored 59 goals in four seasons with the club. “He needs 15 goals. He’ll break that by January or February,” Agbonlahor predicted.
Future Prospects
Agbonlahor expressed his desire to see Watkins stay at Villa and continue to develop. “I want him to stay and I want him as a Villa striker to play for England as well. So I hope he gets minutes at the Euros,” he added.
