Autonomy only means to save LGs from paralysis — Shehu Sani

Sen. Shehu Sani, a social critic, believes that local government autonomy is the best way to promote grassroots governance and keep local council areas running smoothly.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th National Assembly, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday.

Recall that the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice recently launched a suit against state governments in the Supreme Court, seeking to ensure complete autonomy of local governments in Nigeria.

In the case SC/CV/343/2024, the Federal Government requested that the court make an injunction banning state governors from unilaterally, arbitrarily, and unlawfully dissolving democratically elected local government leaders.

The government sought the court to make an order allowing monies in local governments’ credits to be directly routed to them from the Federation Account in accordance with the Constitution’s provisions, as opposed to the claimed illegal joint accounts established by governors.

The 36 governors were sued by their respective solicitors general.

Sani responded to the news by saying that the federal government’s move had the ability to revive grassroots growth and enhance the local government system.

“Local Government autonomy is the only way to save the LGs from bankruptcy and paralysis.

“Poverty and insecurity in the country are rooted in the destruction of the local government system,” Sani stated.
