Notorious bandit leader Bello Turji has reportedly issued a chilling threat to residents of a local government area in Sokoto State, demanding the immediate drainage of a local dam or facing violent consequences.
The warlord’s ultimatum, delivered through intercepted communications, has thrown communities into panic as they grapple with this impossible demand from their terror overlord.
According to security sources familiar with the situation, Turji claims the dam’s existence interferes with his group’s operational movements across the porous Nigeria-Niger border region.
The bandit leader, who commands one of the most feared criminal factions in Northwest Nigeria, allegedly warned that failure to comply would result in coordinated attacks on multiple villages. Local officials confirm receiving the threat but maintain that draining the dam – a critical water source for farming communities – would create humanitarian and ecological disasters.
Security forces have reportedly deployed additional personnel to vulnerable communities while engaging in backchannel negotiations to prevent another bloodbath.
The dam in question serves irrigation needs for over a dozen farming communities already struggling with food insecurity due to previous bandit attacks. Humanitarian workers warn that draining it would compound the region’s malnutrition crisis.
This latest threat underscores the growing audacity of non-state actors in Nigeria’s security landscape, where criminal warlords like Turji now issue environmental decrees to terrorised populations.
