Fire has once again ravaged the market near the Customs area in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

Recall that on March 18, 2023 and November 13, 2023, fires destroyed the market, which was considered to be Maiduguri’s largest perishable products market.

Alhaji Usman Tar, Borno State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, confirmed the event, saying flames broke out in the Layin Yan Katako and outer areas of the market.

Tar said in a statement that the incident, which occurred at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, was effectively extinguished by firefighters.

According to him:

“The Borno State Fire Service immediately dispatched a team of firefighters to the site and the fire was effectively extinguished.

“No human casualty reported. The security of the market was not at risk of trespass or vandalisation.”

He added that the fire department and the State Emergency Management Agency are conducting an on-the-spot investigation into the incident to discover the fundamental reasons and prevent future incidents.
