The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Mokwa in Niger State following the catastrophic flooding that occurred between May 28 and May 29, 2025.
The disaster resulted in the loss of over 200 lives, with more than 500 individuals still missing and thousands displaced.
In a statement released on Sunday, CAN expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as a devastating blow to the community.
The Christian Association of Nigeria called on all Nigerians to unite in support of the affected families and to offer prayers for the souls of the departed. CAN also urged the government and humanitarian organizations to expedite relief efforts to provide immediate assistance to those in need.
The flood, caused by intense rainfall and the collapse of a nearby dam, submerged large parts of Mokwa, including residential areas, farmlands, and critical infrastructure. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency reported that over 500 households were affected, with at least 265 homes completely destroyed. Additionally, two bridges and two roads were washed away, complicating rescue and relief operations.
In response to the disaster, the federal government activated the National Emergency Response Centre and deployed federal agencies to assist in ongoing operations.
Relief materials and temporary shelters are being provided to affected communities. President Bola Tinubu assured citizens that no affected Nigerian will be left behind or unheard of.
Local authorities and community leaders have called for the construction of flood-control infrastructure to mitigate future disasters. The Mokwa flood underscores the urgent need for comprehensive climate adaptation strategies to protect vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
