The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has launched a new recruitment effort targeting Chinese government officials, releasing two Chinese-language videos on social media platforms.
The videos depict fictional scenarios where Chinese Communist Party (CCP) officials, troubled by political purges and fearing for their families’ safety, decide to contact the CIA.
One of the videos shows a high-ranking CCP member expressing concern about colleagues being discarded “like worn-out shoes” and seeking a safer future for his family by reaching out to the CIA.
The videos also provide instructions on how to securely contact the agency, including using the Tor browser on the dark web.
This campaign is part of a broader CIA strategy to strengthen human intelligence gathering in China, Iran, and North Korea.
The agency aims to gather vital information on China’s military capabilities, cyber technology, economic policies, and foreign relations. Despite China’s strict internet censorship, the CIA believes the videos are successfully reaching their target audience.
While China’s embassy has not commented on the campaign, it has previously accused the U.S. of running disinformation campaigns against the country.
The CIA’s recruitment effort is seen as a crucial part of the U.S. response to the growing influence of China in global affairs.
