A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has granted the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) permission to present two additional witnesses virtually in the case against former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Justice Maryanne Anenih approved the request on Thursday, allowing the witnesses, who are currently in the United Kingdom, to testify via digital means at a date yet to be determined.
During Thursday’s proceedings, EFCC’s lead counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, informed the court of his plan to introduce the two additional witnesses to strengthen the case against Emefiele. He also submitted additional proof of evidence to support the charges.
Emefiele’s lead counsel, Olalekan Ojo, SAN, opposed the EFCC’s informal request, arguing that the FCT High Court, as a court of record, required a formal application specifying the names of the witnesses, their intended testimonies, and the reasons for their virtual appearance.
However, the court noted that the EFCC had included the required details in its application for additional proof of evidence. Justice Anenih subsequently granted the request, allowing the anti-graft agency to proceed with virtual testimony for the two witnesses in the trial of Emefiele.
