Cult Clash: Court Remands 29 Suspects in Uyo

Akwa Ibom State Police Command has charged 29 people with allegedly inciting chaos and murder during a cult clash between Klaans and the Black Axe confraternities in Uyo. The Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, says they have arrested 65 suspects after four people died in a cult clash over who should collect tolls and park minibusses in Uyo.

In a statement released on Friday, the police spokesperson, Odiko Macdon, disclosed that after careful checks and investigations by the command, they linked 29 out of the 65 previously arrested individuals to the crisis.

The Police Command in case no. MU/ misc 229c/2023, presided over by COP V EMMANUEL BRANDAN ETIM & ors at Magistrate Court 6, Uyo, announced that they had detained the 29 suspects at Ikot Ekpene correctional facility on charges of cultism and murder. The statement reads;

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command Commissioner of Police, CP Olatoye Durosinmi, has ordered the prosecution of twenty-nine (29) Persons, suspected to be connected to the cult clash at Nwaniba axis of the State, after a diligent screening of the earlier arrested 65 persons.

“The suspects were today taken to court and have been remanded at the Ikot Ekpene Correctional Centre.”

The statement reported that the Commissioner of Police had deployed additional personnel to Eastern Obolo and Ikot Abasi Local Government Areas due to security breaches resulting from communal clashes. He stated;

“While the Command is sparing no resources to restore normalcy, the CP has called on those concerned to give peace a chance.

“He has further called on relevant State and non-State Actors to intensify their interface in order to restore peace,”
