DisCos plans electricity tariff hike nationwide Jan 1

Nigeria’s Electricity Distribution Companies, or DisCos, are allegedly considering raising electricity rates across the country starting on January 1, 2024.

The development was verified to DAILY TRUST by an anonymous source within one of the DisCos.

On Sunday morning, the Daily Post inquired about the proposed increase in electricity tariffs, but the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, also known as NERC, and Abuja Electricity Company had not yet responded.

In a separate interview with DAILY POST, Nigerian Consumer Protection Network President Kunle Olubiyo said that any proposed increase in the price of energy would be completely reckless on the part of the government.

He stated that Nigerians are still coping with the fallout from Tinubu’s administration’s withdrawal of fuel subsidies, rising inflation, and other economic changes.

According to him:

“Increasing electricity at this time, coupled with the impact of fuel subsidy removal, inflation, and other hardships facing Nigerians, will be insensitive on the part of the government.

“It is outright irresponsible for the government to allow an electricity tariff hike.”
