Coach Rena Wakama has been named Head Coach of Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Basketball Team, D’Tigress, by the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF). The federation announced in a tweet on Friday.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), D’Tigress have been without a head coach since Otis Hughley left the five-time Afrobasket champions in 2022.

Wakama’s deal with the D’Tigress would be for two years, according to the tweet.

Wakama was a former Nigerian national team player, now the Head Coach at Stony Brook University in New York, USA.

She was a four-year letterman at Western Carolina and played professional basketball in the United Kingdom and for the Senior Nigerian National Team. Wakama graduated from Western Carolina with a bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation in 2014 and from Manhattan with an MBA in 2019.

She is a Rivers native from Nigeria.

Wakama’s immediate goal would be to prepare the three-time defending champions for the forthcoming twelve-nation 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament, which will be held in Kigali, Rwanda, from July 28 to August 6.
