Olumide Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, revealed his intention to run in the Edo State governorship race next year on Thursday.
Akpata, who just joined the Labour Party, stated that he entered the race to serve the people, identifying the Labour Party as the only people-oriented political party.
the lawyer-turned-politician stated if given the opportunity to fly the LP banner, he would turn the narrative and guarantee that the people benefit from democracy.
According to him:
“My interest is for the people of Edo State. And what I find out in politics and governance in Nigeria today is that the people have been taken out of the equation. No one cares about the people.
“So, when I look around, the only party I find to be people-oriented and to be interested in the lots of our people is the Labour Party. So, I have come here to express my interest in contesting the position of the governor and to carry the people along.”
Akpata offered to raise the Labour Party to new heights if he was elected as the LP’s gubernatorial candidate.
The party’s state chairman, Kelly Ogbaloi, in his reply, stated that the party’s State Working Committee had decided to allow him to run, pledging a level playing field for all applicants.
