President Bola Tinubu has asked leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to follow Ghana’s democratic model.
This was said in President Tinubu’s inaugural remarks at the 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, held on Sunday in Abuja.
The appeal came after Ghana’s successful presidential and legislative elections, with Tinubu claiming that what transpired in the country should be emulated by other nations in the region.
Last Saturday, ex-President John Mahama was reelected to govern Ghana again.
Mahama defeated the current Vice President, Mahamud Bawumia, who called to congratulate the winner even before the official results were announced.
He praised the election’s victory and praised Ghana’s current president, Nana Akufo-Addo, who is attending the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government for the final time as president.
Tinubu said:
“Just a week ago on the 7th of December 2024, presidential election and parliamentary elections took place in Ghana which is the second largest democracy in our region. One of the leading candidates who happens to be the incumbent Vice President, His Excellency Mahamud Bawumia, together with the leading party, New Patriotic Party, NPP conceded defeat and accepted the outcome of the election by congratulating the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama of National Democratic Congress, NDC for his victory even before the announcement of the official results.”
The president of Nigeria also gave Senegal praise for holding recent parliamentary elections successfully.
He urged the member nations of ECOWAS to work together in order to safeguard their inhabitants and create an atmosphere that allows them to flourish.
