The Enugu State administration has reaffirmed its promise to building over 250 smart schools across the state’s 260 wards in order to ensure that the poorest kid in the rural region obtains world-class education utilising 21st-century equipment.
Prof. Leonard Mbah, the education commissioner, made this assurance in Ihe Community in Awgu Local Government Area, Enugu State, while commissioning the remodelled ultra-modern Primary School Ihe.
Prof. Mbah stated that the renovated Primary School was in keeping with Gov. Peter Mbah’s administration’s objective to reform education in the state to worldwide standards, adding that education remained the most powerful weapon in the battle against poverty.
According to him:
“This reminds me of the 1960s when most of our primary schools were built by communities both home and abroad and those schools lasted because communities invested in them. It means that our communities take ownership and that is the only way our institutions can survive and be sustained”.
He invited other communities in Enugu state to follow in the footsteps of the old school pupils in order to supplement the government’s efforts.
“The Development Initiative has taken this as a priority to invest in basic education which is the foundation of the education pyramid and the school is inclusive with people with disability having access to it,” he stated.
In his remarks, Dr Madueke Ekoh, President of the Old Students Association, said the gesture was prompted by the terrible state of the primary school, and they chose to modernise it, adding that it cost them over N200 million to restore the decrepit School into an ultra contemporary school.
