The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) is currently experiencing a partial disruption in water supply, affecting Abuja city centre and surrounding satellite towns.
Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, explained that this is due to the ongoing rehabilitation of two of the four water treatment plants responsible for supplying potable water to residents.
According to Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the rehabilitation is necessary to replace outdated electro-mechanical equipment and improve the plants’ efficiency.
This work required the temporary shutdown of Phases 1 and 2 of the water treatment plants, which are interconnected. Meanwhile, Phases 3 and 4 remain operational but cannot fully meet the demand of the FCT population.
To ease the impact during the Sallah festivities, the two plants undergoing rehabilitation will be temporarily activated to supply water. The rehabilitation work is expected to be completed within two weeks.
In the meantime, the FCT Water Board has put a rationing schedule in place, alternating between Lines 1 and 2 of the distribution network. Residents are advised to store enough water to meet their needs during this period.
Minister Wike has asked residents to be patient, assuring them that these improvements are intended to provide better and more reliable water services in the future.
