Dennis Guwor, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, has urged the federal government to pursue policies that benefit the people by implementing healthy taxation methods that do not burden Nigerians.
During an interview in Asaba on Thursday, Guwor advocated for friendly and honest policies to increase foreign direct investment in Nigeria.
Speaking on Delta State’s contribution to a stronger national economy, he portrayed Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s first year in office as a foreshadowing of what was to come in the following years.
He praised Governor Oborevwori for building on the successes of the previous government in the state, particularly in terms of completing previous administration projects while awarding new projects around the state.
The Speaker dismissed the notion that the governor’s intention is to develop exclusively the Warri-Effurun axis of Delta State, emphasising that development is taking on concurrently in all parts of the state, including riverine communities.
According to Guwor, Warri is Delta State’s economic hub, and the governor saw the need to improve infrastructure in the area.
“It is not about sectionalism, it is about enhancing development to that part of the state for overall economic growth,” he said.
He stated that the legislative arm has been able to carry out its oversight tasks without difficulty, and that the relationship with the administration has been symbiotic.
While discussing about the energy tariff increase, Guwor stated that the governor recently sent a bill to the House to re-enact the state’s power sector law as part of the government’s attempts to mitigate the consequences of inadequate electricity supply and pricing increases on Deltans.
He said that high tariffs, among other issues, had caused many international corporations and enterprises to leave the country’s economy.
