Federal Government has commenced receiving the 2,000 tractors it ordered from Belarus as part of efforts to enhance agricultural productivity and reduce food prices in Nigeria.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, disclosed this on Tuesday during a press briefing, emphasizing the government’s focus on adopting new measures to make farming more efficient.
Kyari attributed the recent drop in food prices to favourable rainfall, a bumper harvest, and effective government policies. “The 2024 farming season was very successful, with farmers across the country recording high yields,” he said.
To sustain this progress, Kyari highlighted the government’s initiatives, including support for wheat farming in highland areas like Taraba State and the provision of modern farming tools.
He revealed that the tractors and other equipment are arriving in batches and will be distributed to farmers nationwide. Additionally, cutting-edge technologies, such as drones, will be introduced in the upcoming farming season to further boost food production.
“The government is also focusing on increasing tomato farming in the South-East and South-West, with harvests expected by May.
“For the dry season, plans are in place to cultivate at least 400,000 additional hectares of farmland, with improved fertilizer supplies to help farmers increase output,” Kyari stated.
The minister noted that Nigeria’s agricultural sector is gaining strength and attracting confidence from global development partners.
“With better tools, improved practices, and increased production, Nigeria is becoming a stronger player in agriculture. The government will continue to build on this momentum to enhance food security and strengthen the sector,” he added.
