The ongoing nationwide hunger protest in Zamfara State became violent on Monday, with protestors blocking key roads and trashing and robbing homes in Gusau, the state capital.
According to reports, protestors battled with police officers outside Gusau’s Central Police Station as they attempted to prevent them from vandalising and robbing private and public property.
It was also discovered that security personnel were dispatched to several restive regions in Gusau to avoid additional breakdowns in law and order.
Many stores and businesses were closed as locals fled into hiding to save their lives.
Most of the petroleum stations were also closed.
The protest prohibited automobiles and commercial motorcycle riders from purchasing fuel at petrol stations, making mobility extremely difficult.
According to one eyewitness, identified as Usman Muktar:
“Hoodlums are now using the opportunity of the nationwide protest to loot peoples’ properties even though it was supposed to be a peaceful protest, as promised by the organizers.
“Only God knows when all these will come to an end so that people can return to their business places.”
“As at now, nothing is moving in the state due to the protest.”
