At least 44 people have been taken into custody in Kogi State for alleged illegal tax collection.
During a press briefing in Lokoja on Tuesday night, Salihu Sule Enehe, the chairman of the Kogi State Internal Revenue Service, or KGIRS, revealed this.
He pointed out that in Kogi State, the agency has achieved a 70% success rate in its attempts to stop unlawful tax collecting.
Enehe said:
“The Kogi State Internal Revenue Service has launched an extensive public awareness campaign, including the installation of billboards across the state and the three senatorial districts, to discourage taxpayers from engaging with illegal tax collectors.
“Although the issue has not been entirely eradicated, the crackdown has significantly reduced illegal tax collection activities. The fight against these unauthorised collectors is ongoing.”
According to the chairman of KGIRS, the organization has collected more than N19 billion as of September, making progress toward its 2024 annual goal of over N30 billion.
According to him, Kogi State Internal Revenue Service is on course to fulfil its year-end objective, he said, attributing this accomplishment to the state’s economic circumstances.
Enehe said he had faith that the management and employees would work together to meet the agency’s target by the end of 2024.
