To celebrate Valentine’s Day on Tuesday, February 14, the Warner Brothers released the official first-look image of the two actors in Joker: Folie à Deux, the upcoming musical sequel to Todd Phillips’s Oscar-winning 2019 film Joker.  The photo was first shared by Lady Gaga on social media capturing the musician-turned-actress and Phoenix in the moments after a passionate kiss, with her red lipstick smudged all over his face. Gaga confirmed her casting in August, posting an animated teaser video that featured her and Phoenix’s silhouettes dancing to old-timey music.

Phoenix had reprised his role as the legendary Batman villain while Gaga had played the role of Harley Quinn, Joker’s longtime love interest whom he first met when she served as his psychiatrist at Gotham City’s Arkham Asylum.

The character ‘Harley Quinn‘ was first created for the acclaimed 1992 Saturday morning cartoon Batman: The Animated Series before it became a fan favourite, featuring not only on TV screens but on comic book pages.  The character was first brought to life on the television screen by Margot Robbie in 2016’s Suicide Squad and its 2021 sequel The Suicide Squad, as well as the character’s own spinoff movie, Birds of Prey (2020).

The Hollywood Reporter first shared the news of Lady Gaga’s role as Harley Quinn in 2022 and  PEOPLE confirmed Gaga’s involvement in the film, back in June 2022.  Lady Gaga herself has shared the film’s release date: Oct 4 2024 along with its official title.

Folie à Deux is reported to reference a delusion or mental illness shared by two people, suggesting that Joker and Harley may be up to no good together.
