On Thursday, the Tribunal Court for Presidential Election Petitions in Abuja set a hearing on May 18, 2023, for a notification motion seeking a live broadcast of the court hearings. People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar submitted the motion with his party.
During a hearing on Thursday, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), Atiku’s attorney, informed the court that all defendants had been served with the application filed on May 7th.
However, he said none of the respondents from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressive Congress (APC) responded to the motion. In response, on behalf of Mr. Tinubu undertook, Wole Oranipekun, SAN, promise to submit a response.
Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud SAN, who represented INEC, and Charles Edosomwen SAN, who stood for the All Progressives Congress, APC, also made similar undertakings.
Pursuant to an agreement with lawyers, the Chairman of the court’s panel, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, scheduled the motion hearing for Thursday, May 18.
A live broadcast for an election tribunal is a real-time transmission of the proceedings of an election tribunal through a television network, radio station, or online broadcasting platform.
The purpose of a live broadcast is to provide public access to the tribunal’s proceedings without the need to be physically present at the location where the proceedings are taking place.
